Soft armour

What if protection could yield?

Observation edition 2026-09-14 · The observation day is not the publication date of every source.

The connection we made

Protection often looks like a wall. This garment imagines another possibility: many small agreements that let the whole move.

An artistic connection, not a proven shared cause. Sources may disagree, and the work keeps their limits visible.

01 / 材料研究

A materials paper explores protection through the way a fabric is built

The authors describe a fabric architecture combining reinforcement that behaves differently in different directions, interlocking units and external confinement. Its abstract reports improved mechanical performance for the particular structure they made. We have an earlier abstract-review record, not a full-paper review or our own material test. The garment is an artistic question prompted by that structure: can something protect while leaving room to move?

Why it belongs here

Interpretation: Keep joints and directional articulation visible; show folding rather than imply a solid shield.

What it does not establish

Preserve original source without upgrading verification. No certified garment protection, no measured couture performance.

Kate Bertash puts a question about surveillance onto clothing

Artist Kate Bertash’s Adversarial Fashion project uses clothing printed with fictional licence plates to address automated surveillance. A familiar wearable object becomes a way to make an otherwise less visible system noticeable. We read the artist’s project description during the 16 September revision. We did not test its technical effects. Its relevance is an artistic possibility: clothing can express a position, not merely decorate a body.

Why it belongs here

Interpretation: Give the textile a legible point of view about consent; allow structure to be expressive rather than purely decorative.

What it does not establish

Page is undated and current text may postdate September 14. A 2019 demo is described; mechanical protection and privacy protection are different. Artist claims were not independently tested.

Cap_able describes a garment whose two sides offer a choice

Clothing brand Cap_able describes reversible fabric in its technology page, in the context of clothing intended to interfere with visual recognition systems. It also explains that effects depend on the model, software version and viewing conditions. We read the brand’s explanation, not an independent performance test. For the artwork, the useful idea is reversibility: a wearer can choose a different surface. Privacy protection and protection from physical force are different claims.

Why it belongs here

Interpretation: Make inside/outside a wearer-controlled reversible decision; present protection as conditional, not absolute.

What it does not establish

Undated current page, read September 16. Same surveillance-textile discovery branch as artist source; not a third independent historical family. No model performance test conducted.

A question to take into your own work

Where could flexibility protect what rigidity breaks?

Choose one boundary in your project. Let it bend in one reversible way while preserving its purpose. Compare friction and failure for one week.
