WITNESS ATLAS / SOURCE RECORD

Time, refunded.

A good product leaves you with something.

Observation edition 2026-09-16 · The observation day is not the publication date of every source.

The connection we made

More time spent is not automatically more value received. A health study raises the cost of ignoring the difference; a reading initiative and a media-art practice offer other ways to spend and organize attention. Here, stopping creates the thing worth keeping.

An artistic connection, not a proven shared cause. Sources may disagree, and the work keeps their limits visible.

01 / ICES

A growing market, and more emergency visits

ICES reported that gambling-disorder emergency visits nearly doubled following expanded online gambling and legalized single-event sports betting in Ontario. The increase was concentrated among young men. Emergency visits are one specific measure of harm.

Why it belongs here

The printer makes growth visible while asking what a rising number leaves out.

What it does not establish

An observational study of a specific place and outcome. It does not establish that all digital products cause the same harm.

02 / NLB Singapore

Fifteen minutes that leave something with you

Singapore’s National Library Board launched ReadSG on 6 September, encouraging a daily fifteen-minute reading habit. It suggests making use of ordinary moments such as a commute or a coffee break.

Why it belongs here

An endless receipt becomes a finite book. Time spent can leave something more than a longer session.

What it does not establish

Fifteen minutes is the initiative’s practical invitation, not a guaranteed threshold for learning. This did not launch on 16 September.

03 / Negativland

Making familiar media say something else

Negativland’s own account describes a practice of rearranging media fragments across sound, books, radio and performance. The rearrangement invites questions about attention, ownership and control.

Why it belongs here

The same fragments change their rhythm and meaning: repetition becomes a book and a pause.

What it does not establish

A creative reference, not additional medical evidence. No recording or image by the group is reused.

A question to take into your own work

What does someone leave with?

Give one endless flow a clear completion point: something read, understood or finished. Compare task completion with time spent. Let a shorter successful visit count as success.
