WITNESS ATLAS / SOURCE RECORD

Open the door. Keep the key.

Being seen should not cost you yourself.

Observation edition 2026-09-16 · The observation day is not the publication date of every source.

The connection we made

A website wants to be found. A photographer wants to be believed. An orchid needs to be studied. None automatically requires handing over every use, a whole identity or an exact address. Open the part that helps; keep the choice about the rest.

An artistic connection, not a proven shared cause. Sources may disagree, and the work keeps their limits visible.

01 / Cloudflare

Search without training

Cloudflare announced a setting that separates being indexed for search from permission to train AI on a website’s content. Some crawler operators already support the choice; others have made time-bound commitments.

Why it belongs here

Different shutters allow different uses. Visibility need not mean permission for everything.

What it does not establish

A vendor announcement, not an independent enforcement test. Opting out is not a guarantee against every misuse.

02 / Apple

A photograph can be verified without naming its maker

Apple describes Reference Image as a chain of verification beginning at the camera sensor, with the photographer’s privacy included in the design. It aims to establish a real camera capture and a bounded time without exposing who took it.

Why it belongs here

A useful fact can remain visible while the full identity stays private.

What it does not establish

Apple’s own engineering account. Verifying a capture does not verify every interpretation of what the scene means.

03 / iNaturalist

Let people study the orchid without giving away its address

iNaturalist keeps observations public while limiting precise location information for some species at risk from disclosure. Its help page uses orchids sought by poachers as an example. Observers can also protect their own location.

Why it belongs here

The orchid remains recognizable behind the moving face. What it is can be shared without sharing exactly where it lives.

What it does not establish

Obscuring a location is imperfect: other clues can still expose it. The work contains no sensitive coordinates.

04 / The Met

Some doors should open all the way

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers Open Access images of public-domain works and basic collection data under CC0. This is a deliberate choice to make cultural resources available for reuse.

Why it belongs here

A fully open set of shutters is the counterpoint. The work questions bundled permission, not sharing itself.

What it does not establish

Not every museum image is unrestricted. No collection image was copied into this work.

A question to take into your own work

What can you share without giving everything away?

List four uses of your product’s content: viewing, copying, training and linking an identity. Find one that is currently bundled with another. Could someone refuse it and still do what they came for?
