WITNESS ATLAS / SOURCE RECORD

The other side of cool.

Every convenience has a somewhere else.

Observation edition 2026-09-16 · The observation day is not the publication date of every source.

The connection we made

Cooling keeps food available, but moves heat and carries other costs. A flight can also leave effects after it disappears. These are different mechanisms with a shared design question: where does your product’s impact go after it leaves the user’s view?

An artistic connection, not a proven shared cause. Sources may disagree, and the work keeps their limits visible.

01 / UNEP OzonAction

Cooling should care for the world outside the room

World Ozone Day on 16 September focuses this year on sustainable cooling and ten years since the Kigali Amendment. Cooling is necessary for health and livelihoods, while refrigerants and energy use also matter for climate.

Why it belongs here

The banquet has a cool front and a visible warm back. Comfort has a wider setting.

What it does not establish

Ozone depletion and warming are different mechanisms. HFC phase-down must not be confused with the earlier phase-out of ozone-depleting substances.

02 / UNEP / FAO

No cooling can also mean no food

A UNEP and FAO report explains the food lost without effective refrigeration, alongside the emissions associated with cold chains. A useful assessment must consider both preserving food and the costs of doing it.

Why it belongs here

Fruit stays on the table because it is protected. Turning every cooler off is not the artwork’s solution.

What it does not establish

The report was published in 2022 and uses historical statistics. These are not live totals for 16 September.

03 / Contrails.org

A flight can leave an effect after it has gone

Contrails.org uses weather forecasts, satellite imagery and other data to study detecting and avoiding aircraft contrails. Some trails form clouds that affect climate after the aircraft has passed.

Why it belongs here

The suspended ribbons extend the question beyond what disappears from view.

What it does not establish

Contrail climate effects and heat rejected by a refrigerator are different physical processes. This is a comparison of impact boundaries, not one causal model.

A question to take into your own work

Where does your convenience send its costs?

Make a list of your product’s other side: who receives the benefit, and who carries the energy use, waiting, labour or waste? Bring one overlooked cost into your next design review.
